Chair's Message

Welcome to the Department of Biochemistry!

Since joining as the Chair in late 2022, I’ve found serving in this role incredibly rewarding and energizing. I am fortunate to have the chance to work with the many amazing people within the department, the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, and the University.

Our department is a powerhouse of research impact and breadth, spanning cell biology, microbiology, infectious disease, development and disease, structural biology and neurobiology, genomics, and DNA damage/repair, among others. We have benefited from the vast opportunities for collaboration with other departments across U of T, including Molecular & Medical Genetics, Immunology, Chemistry, Cell & Systems Biology, Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, to name but a few of our 26 basic and clinical departments within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. We are located across several cutting-edge research sites in the Toronto research community, including the SickKids, UTM, Sunnybrook, the Tanz Centre, the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, the Donnelly Centre, and we benefit from strong alliances with other leading University-affiliated centres. We are fortunate to work closely with many talented undergraduate students, graduate and postdoctoral trainees, and the BUSS, BGSU, and Biochemistry Postdoc Association, with whom we are working to enhance resources for support, and ways to foster ongoing and future career opportunities.

I'm pleased to announce that we have (finally!) updated our department website, and we will be continuing to work with all who use it for their research and study. There are also many exciting initiatives underway for 2025, so please stay tuned, and don't hesitate to contact us (or me) if we can assist!

Sincerely,
Lea
