Biochemistry Department Retreat 2019

The 2019 Biochemistry Retreat was a huge success. Members of the department spent September 4th to the 6th up at Geneva Park where they heard talks from students, postdocs, faculty and invited speakers. In the midst of all this, department members partook in a scavenger hunt, fireside singing and other group activities. the department also distributed awards to its trainees for their accomplishments.

2016 Biochemistry Retreat at Geneva Park

On August 25th and 26th, the Biochemistry Department held its first Retreat outside of Toronto at the Geneva Park Conference Centre near Orillia.

The turnout was terrific with 140 trainees, staff and Faculty gathering for two days to celebrate the science that we do and to enjoy each other’s company in a beautiful lakeside setting. Research Day 2015

More than 200 attendees and 80 posters contributed to another highly successful Research Day. Held in the Medical Sciences Auditorium with posters in the Stone Lobby, we also enjoyed a BBQ lunch on the “patio” in between.

Emad Heidary Arash wins the Beckman Coulter – Molecular Devices Prize

Emad Heidary Arash, from the Attisano lab, presented the Beckman Coulter – Molecular Devices Prize talk for the most outstanding paper published in 2014 from a student in the Biochemistry Department.

In this paper Emad and his co-authors identify ARHGEF7, also known as β-Pix, as a new regulator of the Hippo intracellular signalling pathway.   This work was published last year in the EMBO Journal.

April Pawluk wins the 2015 Sela Cheifetz Award

The 2015 Sela Cheifetz award for outstanding research for a Biochemistry Graduate Student was awarded to April Pawluk from the Davidson Lab.

April presented her work on the identification and analysis of novel anti-CRISPR genes.

Tomas Gverzdys wins the Scott Award for Top All-round Grad Student

This year’s Scott Award went to Tomas Gverzdys from the Nodwell lab.

This award is for the “best all-round Biochemistry graduate student using as criteria performance at seminars, readiness and willingness to assist fellow graduate students and staff, abilities as teaching assistant, etc.” The award is provided from an endowed fund set up by the estate of David Scott in his honour.

Vince Nadeau and Tracy Stone Receive Outstanding TA Award

Outstanding TA awards were awarded to Vince Nadeau (BCH210 lecture course) and Tracy Stone (BCH370 lab course) for their excellence in undergraduate teaching.
