Biochemistry Specialists, Class of 2021

Congratulations to our graduating Biochemistry Specialists! We are very proud of the accomplishments of this impressive group of young scientists. With an ongoing thirst for knowledge and discovery, all ten are bound for exciting graduate programs in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biomedical Communications, and Plant and Microbial Biology, at the University of Toronto, McGill University, and UC Berkeley. Best of luck in grad school!

Reinhart Reithmeier was a member of an Expert Panel convened by the Council of Canadian Academies on “The Labour Market Transition of PhD Graduates”.  The key findings include:

  • PhD graduates bring valued skills to a wide range of sectors, although these skills are often not fully recognized outside academia

Biochemistry Seminars are Online

Yesterday the Department had its first ever online student seminar. Nick Ostan from the Moraes lab presented his work on Lactoferin, LbpA and LbpB. This was followed by Richard Liu from the Kahr lab who spoke to us about structural studies on VPS16B and VPS33B. Despite a few technical difficulties, it was a success by all accounts.

Biochemistry Department Retreat 2019

The 2019 Biochemistry Retreat was a huge success. Members of the department spent September 4th to the 6th up at Geneva Park where they heard talks from students, postdocs, faculty and invited speakers. In the midst of all this, department members partook in a scavenger hunt, fireside singing and other group activities. the department also distributed awards to its trainees for their accomplishments.

The 10,000 PhDs Project

The 10,000 PhDs Project, an initiative of the School of Graduate Studies, used internet searches to determine the current (2016) employment positions of the 10,886 individuals who graduated from the University of Toronto from 2000 to 2015 in all disciplines.

The second annual Biochemistry Departmental Retreat at the Kempenfelt Centre

The second annual Biochemistry Departmental Retreat was held at the Kempenfelt Centre on August 30-31st, 2017. The retreat not only allowed the Department to celebrate our newest scientific discoveries, but also to allow everyone to see old friend and meet new colleagues. 2016 Biochemistry Retreat at Geneva Park

On August 25th and 26th, the Biochemistry Department held its first Retreat outside of Toronto at the Geneva Park Conference Centre near Orillia.
