Alex Palazzo was awarded a 2019-2020 Faculty of Medicine Graduate Teaching Award for Mid-Career Excellence in Graduate Teaching and Mentorship.
Professor Palazzo was one of two recipients honoured with the faculty teaching award in this category, to recognize and celebrate outstanding contributions to graduate education. Candidates are nominated by their Graduate Unit through a student (or recent graduate) – initiated process and the awards are adjudicated by the Faculty of Medicine Graduate Awards Committee consisting of faculty and graduate students.
Professor Palazzo’s many laudatory letters from students and colleagues convincingly described his exceptional contributions to graduate teaching and supervision. The review committee was very impressed by his success with his trainees’ accomplishments; his strong commitment to students’ academic, scientific and professional development; and very innovative approach to teaching and learning. Professor Palazzo’s students described him as “caring and hard-working advisor, always available, consistently going above and beyond to inspire students and inculcate learning skills…” Beyond this Professor Palazzo initiated several department-wide changes that greatly enhanced the educational experience for all biochemistry graduate students.
The award will be presented at the Faculty of Medicine Education Achievement Celebration on May 20, 2020. More information on the event can be viewed at: http://medicine.utoronto.ca/about-faculty-medicine/education-achievement-celebration.
