Mutants Win the Big Game!!!!
As reported in our last correspondence, the Biochemistry Department fielded a softball team aptly named The Mutants this year. Despite our winning name, we had an awful season. We lost our first 6 games, tied the next, and then lost the last game which gave us a record of 0-7-1. Despite the losses, the team didn’t get demoralized. Sure, there were a few days when people said “ugh, our team sucks”, but those words were contrasted by smiles and the constant request for more practices (so we would suck less). Toward the end of the season we realized that all those games were just practice for the real game, the BIG game, the annual grudge game against Immunology!
Immunology and Biochemistry have played an exhibition game against each other as long as anyone can remember. Typically the game is played in late August when the front campus field is still free of undergrads, but this year we decided to play in late September. Given the saturated state of the field at this time of year, we decided to move the game to Riverdale park, and what a great decision that was!! Not only were we playing on a field with cages and benches, the field was also illuminated! Compared to what we had played on before, it was like being in the Major Leagues!
The game was a hard fought one, but The Mutants showed what they were really made of that day. Both Biochemistry and the Immunology “Immunodominators” started off with a strong offence in the first inning to make it 4-3 in favour of the Mutants. Despite the fact that Biochem seemed to have the superior team, the Mutants led the game by a small margin of only two runs after the 4th inning. Given how serious the Immunodominators bench had become, you could tell that there were hungry to take the lead. But the biochemists stepped up their defence and shut out Immunology in the 5th inning giving the Mutants a 12-6 lead! The Immunodominators continued to play neck-to-neck with us, but could never get the momentum they needed to catch up. The game ended 21-12 for The Mutants with most of those remaining runs coming in the 9th inning. Needless to say, the Mutants were absolutely thrilled about winning not only their first game, but winning the only game that actually mattered this year!
The Mutants want to send a special thank you to everyone at IDT who made this season so fantastic. Their financial support, which covered our registration fees, meant that the rest of the team fee went to watermelon at our games and appetizers at both the post season party and the post Immunology party. Of course, they also provided us with the stylish jerseys which were much complimented upon during the year.
The Mutants are always on the lookout for new talent, especially now to maintain the Immunodominators in their rightful place, so if you’d like to join the fun next summer just contact one of our co-captains Tomas Gverzdys or Kristina Han.
