Research Synopsis

From Structure/Function Relationships in the Calcium ATPase
The overall objectives of research in our laboratory are to understand how normal sarcoplasmic reticulum proteins carry out their functions of calcium transport, sequestration and release and how mutant forms cause abnormalities or disease.  In order to accomplish these objectives, we have isolated many of the sarcoplasmic reticulum proteins and characterized them.  We have also utilized recombinant DNA technology to advance our knowledge of the primary structures of these proteins, of their mechanisms of action, and of the roles that mutant proteins play in human genetic disease.

The specific areas of research focus are:
  • Structure/Function relationships in the Calcium ATPase
  • Interactions of SERCA molecules with phospholamban and sarcolipin
  • SERCA1 and sarcolipin in Brody disease
  • Sarcoplasmic reticulum proteins in cardiomyopathy
  • Calcium release channel (ryanodine receptors)
  • Malignant Hyperthermia and Central Core Disease
  • Calcium binding proteins
