Scholarships and Awards

Students are encouraged to apply for all scholarships and awards for which they are eligible. In the case of competitive awards, such as the National and Provincial Awards (e.g. CIHR and NSERC) and the OGSST Awards, recipients will receive a $3000 merit bonus in addition to their basic stipend. OGSST Awards

The Ontario Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (OGSST) awards are based on academic excellence. These awards are valued at $15,000 and qualify as competitive awards for which the $3000 merit bonus applies.

Graduate students studying Haematology/Oncology whose supervisors are members of the Faculty of Medicine
Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology 1. Graduate students supervised by faculty members in the Faculty of Medicine who are members of the Heart & Stroke/Richard Lewar Centre for Excellence at the University of Toronto.
2. Graduate students supervised by faculty members in the Faculty of Medicine conducting cardiovascular/stroke research will be given next preference.
Grace Lumsden/Margaret Nicholds Scholarship in Science and Technology 1. Graduate students supervised by members of the Department of Medicine involved in Parkinson's Disease research
2. Students working in the area of neurodegenerative disease will be given next preference.

OSOTF Awards

The Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF) award is based on financial need. These awards have various values. We will inform you of OSOTF awards, eligibility requirements and deadlines as they become available.

Deadline:
mid-April to mid-May.

Note that OSOTF awards valued below $3000 are added as a top-up to the student stipend to help offset financial need. For awards valued above $3000, $3000 is added as a top-up to the stipend and the remainder is used toward paying the base stipend amount. These awards do not qualify as competitive awards and the $3000 merit bonus does not apply.

To be awarded to a student engaged in the investigation or research in the study of the disease of cancer within the discipline of Biochemistry.
Beverly Wedemire Memorial Scholarship To be awarded to a graduate student, on the basis of academic merit, engaged in the area of cancer research.
Mary Gertrude I'Anson Scholarship To be given to a doctoral student in the health sciences, broadly defined, on the basis of financial need. Academic merit will also be considered.
Kwok Sau Po Scholarship To be awarded to an international student from Hong Kong/China currently enrolled in any full-time master's or doctoral program at the U. of T. Selection will also be based on academic merit.
Joseph Bazylewicz Fellowship To be awarded on the basis of financial need to students with Polish citizenship in any graduate program at U. of T.
UTFA Al Miller Memorial Award To be awarded on the basis of financial need to one doctoral-stream graduate student. Academic excellence will also be considered.
Scace Graduate Fellowship To be awarded to deserving students from South Africa or the U. K. who wants to pursue graduate studies at U. of T. Selection on the basis of academic merit and financial need.
Frank Fletcher Memorial Fund
To be awarded to a graduate student on the basis of financial need who is pursuing study and research of the cause and cure of cancer
Dr. Jesse Keshin Graduate Student Award To be awarded to a Faculty of Medicine graduate student on the basis of financial need.
Scace Graduate Fellowship in Alzheimer's Research To be awarded on the basis of financial need to graduate students who are doing research in the field of Alzheimer's disease.
Dr. Joe A. Connolly Memorial Award To be awarded to a student who demonstrates financial need and has also demonstrated excellence in Cell Biology research.
Dr. J.R. Cunningham Graduate Fellowship in Cancer Research
and
Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation Graduate Fellowships in Cancer
To be awarded to graduate students in the health sciences faculties w ho are studying with University of Toronto Faculty members located at the Ontario Cancer Institute (or its successor) and are engaged in cancer research on the basis of financial need.
Dr. L. Bradley Pett Graduate Award in Biochemistry To be awarded to graduate students in the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, on the basis of academic excellence and financial need.

To be awarded to Faculty of Medicine graduate students enrolled in the MD/PhD program on the basis of academic excellence.

Departmental

University of Toronto Fellowship

All eligible students are considered for this award which is valued at $12,000. U. of T. Fellowships do not qualify as competitive awards and the $3000 merit bonus does not apply. No application is needed.


Outstanding Ph.D. Thesis In Biochemistry Award

We are pleased to announce a new Ph.D. graduate student award valued at $500 to recognize an outstanding Ph.D. thesis and defense, to be given out at our Annual Research Day (Tuesday May 1, 2012).

The award will be based on having a well written and scholarly thesis document that provides important contributions to new knowledge (not strictly publications) and outstanding performance at the oral defense.

Eligibility: Students who completed their PhD defense in the 2011-2012 academic year and have fulfilled ALL SGS requirements prior to the deadline (April 20, 2012) for June 2012 convocation.

Nominations should include:
1. A nomination letter focused on the thesis content and defense, co-signed by the supervisor and supervisory committee members.
2. A copy of the external referee's report
3. A copy of the thesis (such as an extra printed copy from the defense or an electronic version)

Submit nominations to Carrie Harber in the Graduate Office (MSB Rm 5207).

Deadline for receipt of nominations: Wednesday April 4, 2012.


David A. Scott Award

This award is for the "best all-round Biochemistry graduate student using as criteria performance at seminars, readiness and willingness to assist fellow graduate students and staff, abilities as teaching assistant, etc." The award is provided from an endowed fund set up by the estate of David Scott in his honour and is currently valued at $500.

David Scott was one of Canada's most distinguished biochemists. He played a key role in the development of methods for large scale preparation and purification of insulin. He was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 1939 and the Royal Society of London in 1949.

Nomination Procedure: Any faculty member or student may nominate a student currently enrolled in the M.Sc. or Ph.D. program in the Department of Biochemistry. The nomination should be accompanied by at least one letter of reference and a copy of the nominee's C.V. Please bring nominations to Carrie Harber in the Graduate Office (MSB Rm 5205).

Deadline for receipt of nominations: early May; e-mail notification will be sent out.
The winner will be announced at our annual Research Day in mid-May.


Beckman Coulter Prize for Best Graduate Student Publication in Biochemistry

This prize is given by Beckman Coulter for the best first-author publication by a Biochemistry graduate student. It consists of a cash award plus your paper stunningly displayed outside the Biochemistry Seminar Room. The Beckman Award winner will have the opportunity to give an oral presentation of her/his work at the Biochemistry Research Day.

Guidelines:
- The nominated paper must have been published in 2011.
- The student being considered for the prize must be the first author of the paper (joint 1st authors will be considered if both authors are Biochemistry graduate students but the prize will be shared).
- The paper must indicate that the student is affiliated with the Department of Biochemistry.

Nomination Procedure:
1. A student's paper can be nominated by the student or by his/her supervisor.
2. Bring one copy of the paper, labeled to indicate that it is to be considered for the 2011 Beckman Prize, to Carrie Harber in the Graduate Office.
3. Send a PDF file of the published paper (NOT the original manuscript or an advance e-publication) to the Graduate Coordinator

Deadline:
The deadline will be announced by e-mail but is typically in mid-April.
The winner will be announced at our annual Research Day in mid-May.


Excellent Teaching Assistant Awards

Two awards will be given annually in recognition of excellent performance as a Teaching
Assistant in any of the courses offered by the Department of Biochemistry.
