Welcome to BGSU

The Biochemistry Graduate Student Union (BGSU) represents the interests of the 120+ students pursuing graduate degrees in the Department of Biochemistry, notably to the administration of the Department and to the University of Toronto’s Graduate Student Union (UTGSU). It also aims to create links between students working in different research locations, be it on campus or in one of the several cutting-edge institutes affiliated with hospitals. Any biochemistry graduate student, no matter their year of sudy, can participate in the monthly meetings and run for a position on the executive council.

A wide variety of events are organised by the BGSU throughout the year, ranging from academic lectures to social gatherings. Of note are the annual Benjamin Schachter Memorial Lecture, where previous graduates from the Department are invited by the students to talk about their paths to their current occupations, as well as the Holiday Party which is an occasion for faculty, postdocs, and students to mingle around a few drinks in the jovial December mood. The BGSU also sets up lunches between students and guest speakers for students to get a perspective on how research is conducted in a different setting, and organises regular wine and cheese events.

BGSU Town Hall

The BGSU is hosting a student-only town hall meeting next Wednesday October 25th from 5-6pm at MSB2172 (regular seminar room). In this meeting, the Co-Chairs will go over what we have accomplished this month, as well as future plans in action. ALL students and postdocs in the Biochemistry graduate department are welcome to bring up any concerns and questions, and we will open up the floor to discussion.

We also created an anonymous feedback and suggestion form where students can voice any concerns. This form will be checked by the Co-Chairs of BGSU daily and can be found here. If there is anything you would like to be brought up anonymously for the upcoming town hall meeting.
