Program Requirements for Student and Postdoctoral Fellowships

Courses and Meetings
All graduate students in the program will be required to take, and post-doctoral fellows will be encouraged to attend, one of the following courses:

JBB2026, half course (24 hrs)
Protein Structure, Folding and Design (coordinated by Hue Sun Chan and Julie Forman-Kay)
Next time the course will be offered is September, 2012 and then every two years.

BCH2029, half course (24 hrs)
Protein Folding and Disease (coordinated by John Glover and Avi Chakrabartty)
The course will be offered every two years starting September, 2011

BCH2028, half course (24 hrs)
Protein Quality Control and Trafficking within the Secretory Pathway (will be coordinated by David Williams and Allen Volchuk)
The course will be offered every two years starting January, 2013.

BCH2024, quarter course (12 hours)
Molecular Chaperones (will be coordinated by Walid Houry)
The course will be offered every three years starting January, 2012.

All trainees are required to attend one of the ethics courses that are offered at the University of Toronto at least once during their tenure. Proof of attendence needs to be presented with the Progress Report.
One such course that is recommended is the ‘Ethics in Graduate Research’ seminar course offered by the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering . While not current open for registration, some information is available here.
Furthermore you can download the "Research Ethics in the Health Sciences – Workshops, 2011" registration document. Once again, at this time while there are no workshops open for registration, there is useful information for registering in the future.

In addition, trainees are expected to attend the regular Protein Folding seminars during which they will also have the opportunity to make presentations. A biennial international meeting will also be held as part of this program; selected trainees are expected to give talks in this meeting.

Evaluation Procedure
During their tenure, trainees will be required to submit brief annual progress reports (due September 30th for September 1st to August 31th reporting period of every year). Click to download the progress report form (Progress_Report).

At the end of their fellowship, trainees will be asked to submit a final report and any manuscripts they have generated. Participating mentors are also required to submit an assessment of each trainee concurrent with the trainee’s final report. Click to download the final report form (Final_Report).

The goals of this evaluation process are (1) to monitor the effectiveness of the training program and (2) to collect data that could be used to increase the effectiveness in achieving our targets.
